The Lord of the Earth
"The
Lord of the Earth." According to myth, Quetzalcoatl
and Tezcatlipoca created the earth from a being
that lived on the primordial waters, and whose joints bore eyes and mouths
that snapped like savage beasts. This being was squeezed so much by both
gods that it broke apart. Thus was born the "Lord and Lady of the
Earth," whose mission was to receive individuals before their journey
to Mictlan. He kept human remains on his chest and he was associated with
all types of low-lying animals, insects and bones. Image from the Codex
